Quick Answer: Parker Custom Security recently completed an intercom installation project at a multi-tenant building at 403 West 154th Street in Hamilton Heights, Manhattan, NY. The project included a new Mircom telephone-entry system with a weatherproof keypad, backlit directory display, and proximity card reader, mounted directly into the building's brick exterior. The upgrade gives tenants and visitors a reliable way to communicate and enter the building.

Intercom system installation on masonry at a multi-tenant building in Manhattan NYC

Parker Custom Security recently completed an intercom installation project at a multi-tenant building at 403 West 154th Street in Hamilton Heights, Manhattan — right in the Sugar Hill Historic District. The project replaced the building's aging entry system with a new Mircom telephone-entry intercom, giving tenants and visitors a reliable way to communicate at the front door.

If you manage a multi-tenant property, you already know what happens when the intercom stops working the way it should. Visitors can't reach the unit they're looking for, deliveries pile up at the door, and tenants start calling the management office instead of just buzzing someone in. It's a small piece of equipment, but when it's not working, it becomes a daily headache for everyone in the building.

What We Installed

The finished system includes:

  • A weatherproof stainless steel keypad with backlit number and letter keys, built to hold up against NYC weather and heavy daily use
  • A backlit directory display that walks visitors through the process — press the call key, dial the unit, and connect directly
  • A proximity card reader so tenants with the right access control credential can enter without needing to buzz in at all
  • A durable stainless steel housing , mounted securely into the masonry for long-term reliability

The whole unit was fitted flush against the brick, so it looks like it was always meant to be there — no awkward gaps, no exposed wiring, no eyesore next to the building's entrance.

Why This Matters for Property Managers

Older intercom systems tend to fail in ways that are more frustrating than dangerous at first — a sticky keypad, a directory display that's hard to read, a call button that only works half the time. But those small annoyances add up fast for tenants, and they reflect on the building as a whole. A working intercom is one of the first things a visitor, prospective tenant, or delivery driver interacts with, and it sets the tone for the whole property.

Buildings across Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, Westchester, and Northern New Jersey run into the same handful of triggers for a project like this one:

  • The existing system is outdated and parts are hard to source
  • Tenants are complaining about missed calls or a broken keypad
  • The building added or changed units and the directory needs updating
  • Management wants credential-based entry (like the proximity reader above) in addition to, or instead of, a phone call

Built for Older NYC Buildings

Parker Custom Security has extensive experience working in older NYC buildings, where masonry construction requires precision installation work. This project is a good example of how a new intercom system can be integrated cleanly into existing brick construction without disrupting the building's exterior or requiring major structural work.
