Parker Custom Security repairs intercom and buzzer systems in apartment buildings, co-ops, condos, offices, and hotels across all five New York City boroughs, Westchester County, and Northern New Jersey. We fix the problems property managers call about most: a door that won't buzz open, no sound or one-way sound, a blank video monitor, a single apartment that can't call or answer, a damaged or weathered entry panel, and systems that have lost power or have failing wiring. We service most major brands, including Aiphone, Mircom, Elvox, Comelit, ButterflyMX, DoorKing, and Viking, whether or not we installed them. Because Parker also installs commercial doors and door hardware, we can fix the electric strike, lock, or door behind a "door won't release" problem, not just the intercom. For emergency or scheduled intercom repair, call (212) 491-5627 or request a callback.

Common Intercom Problems We Repair

Most intercom failures in NYC buildings fall into a handful of patterns. Knowing which one you have helps us show up with the right parts.

The door won't buzz open

Tenants press the release button and nothing happens, or the door clicks but won't open. The cause can be the intercom, the power supply, the wiring, or the electric strike or magnetic lock on the door itself.

No sound, or sound one way only

Visitors can hear the apartment but the apartment can't hear them, or the line is dead, crackling, or buzzing. Usually a failed speaker, microphone, amplifier, or wiring connection.

No picture on the video monitor

The call comes through but the screen stays black, flickers, or rolls. Common causes are a failed camera, a bad video connection, or a monitor or power supply at the end of its life.

One apartment doesn't work

The rest of the building is fine, but one unit can't receive calls or open the door. That points to the apartment station, its wiring run, or its connection at the panel.

Damaged or weathered entry panel

Cracked buttons, worn name directories, water inside the panel, or vandalism. Outdoor panels and gate stations take the most abuse and fail first.

The whole system is dead

No calls, no release, no display. Often a failed power supply or transformer, a tripped circuit, a controller fault, or wiring damaged during other work in the building.

When the Problem Is the Door, Not the Intercom

A "broken intercom" call is often really a door problem. The intercom sends the release signal, but the electric strike is worn out, the magnetic lock has lost power, the door has sagged so the latch binds in the strike, or the closer slams the door before it can be pushed open.

Many intercom companies stop at the panel. Parker Custom Security is a commercial door and hardware contractor as well as an intercom contractor, so the same technician can diagnose the whole entry: the intercom, the electric strike, lock, and closer, and the door and frame. You get one visit and one fix instead of two contractors blaming each other.

Quick check before you call: if you can hear the strike buzz or click when someone presses release but the door still won't open, the problem is very likely at the door, not in the intercom.

If a part is no longer made for your system, we'll tell you, and explain whether the system can be kept running or should be replaced.

Repair or Replace? We'll Tell You Honestly

Plenty of intercoms can be repaired for a fraction of the cost of a new system. Others have reached the point where every repair buys a few months. Here is how we help you decide:

  • Repair makes sense when the system is reasonably current, parts are available, and the failure is isolated: one station, one speaker, a power supply, or a damaged panel.
  • Replacement makes sense when parts are discontinued, failures keep coming back in different places, the wiring is deteriorating throughout, or the building wants video, smartphone answering, or access control.
  • Upgrading is often easier than expected. Many older audio systems can be upgraded to video using the building's existing wiring.

If replacement is the better choice, see our intercom system installation page and our guide to choosing an intercom for an apartment building.

How an Intercom Service Call Works

1. Tell us what's failing

Call or request a callback. Tell us the brand if you know it, what tenants are reporting, and whether the whole building or one apartment is affected.

2. On-site diagnosis

A technician checks the entry panel, power supply, wiring, apartment stations, and the door hardware the intercom controls, and finds where the failure actually is.

3. Repair or a clear quote

Straightforward repairs are made on the spot when we have the parts. When parts must be ordered or replacement makes more sense, you get a written scope and price first.

4. Test the whole entry

We test calls, audio, video, and door release from the entrance and from apartment stations, and confirm the door closes and locks behind every visitor.

NYC Law: A Working Intercom Isn't Optional

Under New York's Multiple Dwelling Law Section 50-a, Class A multiple dwellings with eight or more apartments that were built or converted after January 1, 1968 must have an intercom at the self-locking entrance door, with two-way voice communication to each apartment and the ability to release the door from inside the apartment. The owner must keep that system in working order.

In practice, a broken intercom in a covered building is a maintenance obligation, not a nice-to-have, and tenants can report it through 311. Fixing it quickly protects tenants and keeps the building out of trouble. Our guide to NYC intercom requirements for apartment buildings explains which buildings are covered.

Intercom Repair FAQ

Who repairs apartment building intercoms in NYC?

Parker Custom Security repairs intercom and buzzer systems in apartment buildings, co-ops, condos, offices, and hotels across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, as well as Westchester County and Northern New Jersey. Parker has worked on NYC buildings since 2003 and also installs the doors and door hardware intercoms control. Call (212) 491-5627 for emergency or scheduled service.

Can you repair an intercom that another company installed?

Yes. Parker services most major intercom brands, including Aiphone, Mircom, Elvox, Comelit, ButterflyMX, DoorKing, and Viking, whether or not we installed the original system. If parts for an older system are no longer available, we will explain the options for keeping it running or replacing it.

Why won't my building's intercom buzz the door open?

The release signal has to travel from the apartment station through the intercom and power supply to the electric strike or magnetic lock on the door. A failure anywhere along that path stops the door from opening. If you can hear the strike click but the door still won't open, the problem is usually at the door: a worn strike, a sagging door binding on the latch, or a closer that needs adjusting.

Should I repair or replace my building's intercom?

Repair usually makes sense when the system is reasonably current, parts are available, and the problem is isolated to one component. Replacement makes more sense when parts are discontinued, failures keep recurring in different places, the wiring is deteriorating, or the building wants video or smartphone answering. Parker will tell you which option fits after diagnosing the system.

Is a landlord required to fix a broken intercom in NYC?

For many buildings, yes. New York's Multiple Dwelling Law Section 50-a requires an intercom at the self-locking entrance of Class A multiple dwellings with eight or more apartments built or converted after January 1, 1968, and the owner must keep it in working order. Tenants can report a broken intercom through 311.

Can an old audio intercom be upgraded to video?

Often, yes. Many buildings can move from an audio buzzer system to video using the existing wiring, depending on the wiring's condition and the system chosen. Parker checks the wiring during the service call and recommends the simplest upgrade path.

How much does intercom repair cost in NYC?

It depends on what has failed. Replacing a power supply or a single apartment station costs far less than repairing an entry panel or tracing a wiring fault through the building. Parker diagnoses the problem first and gives you a clear price before any larger repair or replacement.
